Consumers seek to curb farm animal suffering

Article Abstract:

The large corporate farms which are taking the place of small family operations are often more concerned with maximizing productivity and profit than with farm animal welfare. Corporate leadership can improve animal welfare by insisting that suppliers follow humane standards. Both animal protection and transportation laws need to be revised to take account of current industry trends. Meat and poultry producers need more involvement in humane farm animal treatment. All concerned need to enforce higher standards and train personnel in humane animal handling.

Nuclear power rate regulation after Eastern Enterprises: are ratepayers being taken for a ride?

Article Abstract:

The questionable constitutionality of requiring ratepayers to continue paying for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants after they no longer benefit from the power plants' generation of electricity is discussed. Ratepayers may be able to use the ruling in Eastern Enterprises v. Apfel to challenge rate regulation after the termination of service as an unconstitutional taking.
