Court spending under review; waste seen in U.S. courthouse construction, judicial conferences

Article Abstract:

Congress has turned a sharp eye on the federal judiciary in an effort to cut costs and, some say, to serve a larger agenda, perhaps making the judicial branch more accountable to the legislative. Among the proposals have been limiting the locations and expense of judicial conferences, making them optional with voluntary attendance, ceasing construction of new courthouses, establishing an inspector general's office for the US Courts, and leaving unfilled or eliminating some judgeships.

Toxic torthouse? Ailing employees sue builders of new courthouse in suburban Chicago

Article Abstract:

The DuPage County, IL Judicial and Office Center stands empty a year and a half after opening apparently a health threat because workers there suffered so many health problems. Preliminary results from outside consultants indicate that chemicals released from building materials and furniture and a defective ventilation system may be at fault. Other investigators said employee health complaints were similar to those from other offices with air quality problems.

Taco Bell's run for the courthouse; company's wrongful litigation suit against a plaintiff's lawyer is dismissed

Article Abstract:

A federal district judge has stated in Taco Bell Corp. v. Cracken that the Taco Bell Corp could not sue the opposing counsel for the counsel's actions in representing a client, thus voiding the corporation's attempted claim that the tort of wrongful litigation because of a collusion to obtain a favorable venue took place. Taco Bell officials issued a statement voicing disappointment with the result.
