Danger of executing the innocent on the rise; four-year study shows that more innocent people are being sent to death row

Article Abstract:

The Death Penalty Information Center and other capital punishment opponents claim the chances that an innocent prisoner could be executed have increased. Their evidence is the 21 death row prisoners found innocent by courts and released during 1993-97, and the 69 wrongful convictions overturned since 1973. Moreover, the number of executions has increased since federal habeas corpus rules have changed even as funding cuts hampered the efforts of opposition groups.
