Death of a liberal icon: Justice William J. Brennan Jr. shaped constitutional law through personality, perseverance and vision

Article Abstract:

Justice William J. Brennan Jr. was nominated to the US Supreme Court in Sep 1956 by Pres Dwight D. Eisenhower. He served for 34 years and wrote 1,360 opinions, strongly impacting the law of the 20th-century. His nomination was initially seen as a political move because Eisenhower needed working-class Catholic support and Brennan was an Irish Catholic and Democrat. Even he expected to have little impact. Instead, his strong protection of fundamental liberties, his commitment public service and his devotion to law was an influence on the whole Supreme Court. He died on Jul 24, 1997.

Opinions on Rehnquist: views on the chief justice's impact are still mixed

Article Abstract:

The verdict on US Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist's lasting influence 10 years into his term is not that he has engineered a shift of the court to the right in the way conservatives hoped and some observers feel the conservative stridency of his youth has mellowed. The pivotal votes of the Court come from Justices Anthony Kennedy and Sandra Day O'Connor. Rehnquist's substantive influence has been felt in the areas of federalism, habeas corpus and criminal law. As an associate justice, Rehnquist was the Court's foremost proponent of federalism.

Short list for the high court; Hispanic activists offer judicial candidates for nomination

Article Abstract:

No Hispanic American has ever been nominated to the US Supreme Court, although presidents of both parties have for the last 10 years considered Hispanic American candiates and one in in nine Americans boasts that heritage.US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit judge Fortunato Benavides and 2nd Circuit judge Jose A Cabranes would be prime candates. Activists hope such an appointment is likely with a Gore presidency or the resumption of a Bush one.
