An Internet road to court; getting your lawsuit to the clerk's office in this district requires a Web browser instead of a car

Article Abstract:

The federal district court for the Northern District of Ohio in Jan 1996 became the first US court to accept filings by Internet. This way it takes the court just minutes to handle hundreds of cases. The system requires a Web browser and software able to convert computer files into portable documents. Problems as more courts turn to the Internet include whether electronic filing should be just an option or a requirement and how to handle pro se parties who do not have access to a computer.

Opposites don't always attract: take care before representing a lawyer who is also an adversary in a matter

Article Abstract:

Attorneys and judges who retain independent counsel must be wary to avoid conflicts of interest. If attorneys represent adversaries in another unrelated action, a potential conflict or confidentiality problems could result. ABA Formal Opinion 97-406 provides guidelines for these situations. The Opinion also says the imputation of conflicts from one member of a firm to other members must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
