Despite Title IX, double standard still persists

Article Abstract:

Discrimination against female athletes remains 25 years after Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools receiving federal funds. Women account for more than half of undergraduate students and only about a quarter of athletic operating expenses and recruiting dollars, according to surveys by the Women's Sports Federation. Women coach only about 1% of men's teams and fewer than half of women's teams, and only earn about 2/3 as much as their male counterparts. Inadequate enforcement efforts by the Office for Civil Rights account partially for these disparities.

Cheering on women and girls in sports: using Title IX to fight gender role oppression

Article Abstract:

Feminist theories of empowerment and resocialization through sports can be employed to expand the scope of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and to counter the backlash against efforts to increase the participation of girls and women in school sports. Having girls participate in sports on a equal footing with boys at an early age will ensure that they benefit from the skills developed in sports and that they are not bound by certain social roles. Title IX should be used to expand secondary school girls sports and to increase co-ed sports for pre-teens.
