Disability Discrimination Act 1995

Article Abstract:

The UK's Disability Discrimination Act 1995 protects handicapped people from discrimination in employment, pension and insurance benefits, housing, and provision of goods, services, and facilities. Employers cannot treat employees unfavorably because of disabilities and are obliged to make adjustments to work situations creating hardships for disabled employees. The legislation includes an access to work scheme and creates a National Disability Council. Act provisions also cover trade union, contract workers, and authorize industrial tribunals to enforce the Act.

Disability Discrimination Bill

Article Abstract:

The significant feature of the Disability Discrimination Bill, which is waiting approval from Parliament, is that it makes it a statutory right to not be discriminated in employment because of disability. The bill aims to cover the issues of employment discrimination, access to foods and services and the creation of a National Disability Council to advise the government on issues concerning disability discrimination. The bill has limitations in that it does not address the issue of indirect discrimination and covers only employers with 20 or more employees.
