Divorce turns ex-husbands into crusaders; many legal-reform advocates soured on attorneys in matrimonial court

Article Abstract:

As many as 80% of the people active in the legal-reform movement turned to it because of bad experiences in divorce court. That notoriously adversarial arena convinced Alfred Adask, Carl Lanzisera, Robert J. Bertrand, and Milton K. Louvaris that family law and perhaps US law in general must be reinvented from top to bottom. Bertrand helped found the National Congress for Legal Reform, Louvaris started Family Advocates, Lanzisera co-founded Americans for Legal Reform, and Adask launched AntiShyster magazine.

Divorce bar hits report on misdeeds

Article Abstract:

A report claiming that some divorce lawyers routinely engage in financial misconduct when representing women has irked some members of the New York, NY divorce bar. The Mar 12, 1992 report by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs was prompted by female clients' complaints against their counsels' financial demands. The report recommends the adoption of a 'Consumer Bill of Rights' for clients, itemized legal billing and that courts notify the Consumer Affairs Department of any suspected abuse.

Contested adoption pushes the hot buttons: relatives of a black child contest his adoption by his foster mother, a white lesbian

Article Abstract:

A Washington DC adoption case involving a white lesbian's adoption of a black child drew national attention when the child's family opposed the adoption. TJ's great-aunt initially declined to seek custody of him from his neglectful mother, and MH, a lawyer, became his foster-mother. Later TJ's mother decided to pass custody to the great-aunt, but MH also sought custody. The two sides disputed over what decision-making process was appropriate, including the mother's role after being found neglectful.
