Doing well by doing good; investment funds satisfy financial goals and social concerns

Article Abstract:

'Socially responsible' mutual funds are on the increase, but their performance is mixed. Most still refuse companies dealing with South Africa, weapons makers, utilities dependent on nuclear power and excessive polluters. Examples of growth funds are Dreyfus Third Century, New Alternatives and the Domini Social Index Trust. Income funds include the Calvert Social Investment Bond Fund and the Muir California Tax Free Bond Fund. Pax World and Calvert Social Investment Managed Growth are examples of balanced funds. Money market funds include Working Assets and Calvert's Money Market Fund.

Rainy days; planning for the worst can make tough economic times easier

Article Abstract:

The recession continues as of mid-1992 and the impact on lawyers has been severe. When people are worried about their job security, prudent financial measures to take include setting up a budget, consolidating and paying off consumer debt, and building enough of a savings account to pay for three months' living expenses. Those who have been fired should consider selling investments, keeping retirement plan money intact so that it can go into the new job's pension plan, claiming unemployment, and keeping health insurance coverage for 18 months, as allowed by law.

Taking the pain out of saving; small steps can squeeze savings out of tight budgets

Article Abstract:

There are ways to save without significantly reducing discretionary income. These include paying off credit card bills and then using them infrequently or not at all, using salary-reduction savings plans, authorizing a mutual fund to draw money from your bank account on a regular basis to invest, or charging savings on an American Express card. Such measures will gradually increase savings in a relatively painless way.
