Dreams really do come true

Article Abstract:

While many lawyers wish they could leave large firms and do more interesting or socially meaningful work, an increasing number succeed by starting with that goal and not getting trapped into an expensive lifestyle. Many are women, because as a group they derive status and self-worth more from non- financial sources. Lawyers in general avoid emotional risk, which such a transition can create but research can ameliorate. Four lawyers who left large firms are profiled; one has returned but does extensive pro-bono work.

The great escape; the joys and woes of resort town practice

Article Abstract:

Attorneys who leave big cities to practice in resort towns are normally motivated by lifestyle considerations such as the desire for flexibility and more collegiality. The disadvantages they may encounter include a much lower salary without a lower cost of living, a generalist practice of law rather than the opportunity to specialize, and local lawyers who would prefer not to have any more competition.

Bouncing back

Article Abstract:

Nine lawyers laid off by Phoenix, AZ's Streich Lang Weeks Cardon and French reminisce about career changes and life changes following their 1990 layoffs by the firm. Post-Streich lives have varied, with career choices ranging from judging to teaching to taking jobs with other law firms. There seems to be a consensus that the layoffs were initially a shock but that things turned out for the best.
