Still weighting: location allowances in 1997

Article Abstract:

British employment surveys find weighting of location allowances still to be the rule in 1997, with employees in London and southeastern England receiving additional payments which were implemented during the economic growth of the late 1980s and have been changed little since that time. A 1997 survey of 60 pay groups finds employers are at most letting them keep pace with general pay raises, despite a decrease in unemployment and the appearance of skills shortages in some areas during the past year. Tables detail the location allowances paid by the 60 pay groups.

Drivers' pay and allowances

Article Abstract:

UK drivers, including operators of large goods vehicles and light vans, receive basic salaries ranging from 6,500 to 21,983 pounds sterling a year and supplement these wages with substantial overtime pay, according to 1995 survey data. Drivers' basic work weeks are usually between 35 and 45 hours per week. However, weekly overtime averaging 8.8 hours increases the average work week to 50.3 hours. Subsistence payments for meals and overnight lodging are also provided, and usually increased annually in line with general pay increases.
