Enforcement of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade

Article Abstract:

Resolution of international economic disputes under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) has improved since the first round was completed in 1947, and the Uruguay Round's establishment of the World Trade Organization as an adjudicative body in 1994 promises to offer legal solutions to economic disputes. Dispute resolution mechanisms under the 1947 and 1979 agreements were limited in scope. The 1994 agreement established a permanent forum for trade disputes, but the success of the World Trade Organization will depend on the commitment of contracting parties and attorneys involved.
