FBI head rebuts report; accused of wrongdoing, Sessions claims charges unfair, inaccurate

Article Abstract:

FBI director William S. Sessions has challenged a Jan 1993 report by the Department of Justice's Office of Professional Responsibility accusing him of misusing his office. Charges against him included the claiming of inappropriate tax exemptions, lack of concern with the improper appearance of official travel to places where relatives lived and receiving a friendship deal on his mortgage loan. Sessions claims the report was biased and that portions were leaked in a calculated attempt to libel him. Some observers feel President Clinton will pressure him to resign.

Reviews mixed for fired FBI director; replacement Louis Freeh said to know the agency "from the bottom up." (William S. Sessions)

Article Abstract:

The firing of FBI Director William S. Sessions and his replacement by Louis J. Freeh was met by mixed views on Sessions' tenure and unmitigated praise of Freeh. Sessions was praised for trying to protect the FBI's independence and working towards minority advancement. The latter earned him some opposition from white, male employees. He was criticized for possibly unethical lapses in his personal life. Freeh was described as having all of his predecessor's good points plus the high regard of insiders.

FBI head investigated; critics charge Justice probe politically motivated

Article Abstract:

The Dept of Justice's (DOJ) criminal investigation of FBI Director William S. Sessions has been dropped, but DOJ's Office of Professional Responsibility is still conducting an ethics investigation of Sessions. Some Republicans charge that the investigation is politically motivated, while critics of Sessions cite the Director's allegedly ineffective management style and delays in settling race discrimination charges by FBI employees.
