Fighting genetic discrimination; lawyer, denied insurance on basis of father's disease, backs protective laws

Article Abstract:

Lawyer Theresa Morelli seeks to prevent discrimination by health insurers against those with genetic diseases. Whether a person is at risk for some genetic diseases can be determined by screening their DNA for 'markers.' Morelli wants to keep these tests from being used as one of the factors in underwriting and hiring. The federal Human Genome Project also represents a privacy threat. Morelli fears the project will identify more genetic markers for disease that health insurers can use to deny coverage.

A lawyer's pledge; living up to the ideals of the profession takes work

Article Abstract:

The attorney's oath is the minimum standard of an attorney's professional responsibility. It is open to a wide range of interpretations, allowing for different individual conceptions of professional duty. Young lawyers should fulfill the pledge's requirement of conscious and affirmative conduct through pro bono work and community involvement. Veteran attorneys examine their dedication to the good of the profession in light of the oath they have taken.

Nowhere to hide; a lawyer faces his own nemesis in 'Cape Fear.'

Article Abstract:

Martin Scorsese's remake of 'Cape Fear' portrays an attorney's struggle with his own hypocrisy. Attorney Sam Bowden is 'tried' by a former client, Max Cady. Bowden suppressed evidence which might have exonerated Cady. Nick Nolte's performance as Bowden explores the 'lawyer mask', which some practitioners hide behind, espousing ethics and objectivity in professional life, but not living up to these codes in personal life.
