Qualcomm counsel hits the jackpot

Steven R Altman, the executive vice pres and general counsel of Qualcomm Inc, is profiled. Qualcomm commercialized code-division multiple access (CDMA), a digital wireless communications technology. CDMA id udrf in 18% of wireless handsets sold aross the world, and the 1999 introduction of this technology caused a 27-fold increase in the value of the company's stock.

Working in a woman's world

Daniel Taitz, the general counsel of Oxygen Media Inc, a 24-hour cable television network and web of Internet sites for women, is profiled. It is expected that Oxygen's programming will reach 27 million viewers by the end of 2002, and so far, the company has raised $270 mil. Taitz has charge of six attorneys and senior vice presidents for legal and business affairs.

Fighting poverty with $30 billion

Ko-Yung Tung, the vice pres and general counsel of the World Bank, is profiled. The World Bank, owned by 181 member countries, provides an average of $30 bil in loans each year to underdeveloped countries to aid economic growth. The US, as the bank's largest shareholder, controls 16.7% of the vote.
