Law firms can reduce Internet security risks; use of proxy gateways, packet filters and encryption restricts outsiders' network access

Article Abstract:

Law firms connected to the Internet must develop security plans to protect confidential information. A written security policy should be the first step. Firewall protection is a popular second step and can include packet filter tools. Proxy or application gateways are an often-used supplement to packet filters. Various companies make tools for encrypting and decrypting data. The biggest challenge to an Internet security plan is the need for frequent monitoring.

Uses for a firm's web site go beyond marketing; large and small law firms also use home pages for recruiting and to keep clients informed

Article Abstract:

Law firms can use the World Wide Web for purposes other than marketing. In addition to public relations tools like the firm's brochure and press releases, Web sites can contain recruiting brochures, legal material of interest to clients such as changes in the law and recent rulings and information on how to contact attorneys by e-mail or regular mail. The World Wide Web is becoming a standard communication tool which clients expect a law firm to have.
