Free enterprise in a free world: 10-year life expectancy under laissez-faire

Article Abstract:

Paul Rand Dixon, Pres Kennedy's FTC Chairman, was a staunch believer in the role of capitalism as a provider of personal freedom. While the free enterprise system was not perfect, he saw it as superior to other economic systems such as custom and tradition or sovereign command. He believed US economic growth would be even better if unfair competition could be minimized. He also said a totally laissez-faire system, without antitrust restraints, would destroy itself with cartels; according to Dixon, Marx failed to see capitalists would enact laws to restrain monopolies and prevent such destruction.
