Going the distance for his Baby Bell

Article Abstract:

James R. Young, the executive vice pres and general counsel of the Bell Atlantic Corp., heads a department of 135 attorneys with a legal budget of about $76 mil. The department has decreased by 50 since the number working for Bell Atlantic and NYNEX before the merger of the two and the budget has decreased by 18%. The company views as its most important challenge getting approval to enter the long-distance market. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 requires the 'Baby Bells' to show they have opened their local markets to outside competition before they can take part in the long distance market.

That in-house attraction is just a mirage

Article Abstract:

Private law firm lawyers thinking of switching to corporate counsel work because they want shorter work hours and less pressure should think again as in-house work has in the last decade lacked job security, financial competitiveness, job mobility, opportunity to develop job skills and had poor exit options. These trends have resulted from recent developments in the business world. Law firms should aim for efficiency and profitability with a more human touch so that lawyers will have a misguided yearning for the corporate world.
