'Group searches' are here to stay

Article Abstract:

Group searches try to balance civil rights and society's interest, allowing some breaching of individual rights as long as this is balanced by increased public safety. Examples are airport screening gates, sobriety checkpoints and the drug testing of those whose jobs make them responsible for public safety. Searching some innocent people without probable cause is balanced by the increased public safety resulting from the apprehension of some terrorists and of getting some drunk drivers off the roads.

The corporate ethics test

Article Abstract:

Approximately 264 companies responded to a survey on corporate ethics programs, and the increased involvement of senior management in creating and implementing ethical codes was attributed to several factors. These included labor force diversity, concern about their employees' inadequate education, total quality management and the desire of multinational businesses to be sensitive to local customs. Industrial safety and employee honesty are the subjects most often addressed in the codes.

Corporate behavior: fewer flaws mean fewer laws

Article Abstract:

Business associations need to take on the task of promoting ethical conduct on the part of their membership, just as medical societies and bar associations attempt to do in those professions. They should develop moral codes, promote ethical conduct as a high priority among business leaders, and and encourage the teaching of business ethics in graduate business schools. These measures would enhance public opinion of businessmen and diminish the need for reregulation.
