Here come the judges: plugging in courts is slow, steady work

Article Abstract:

Judges are making progress in their mastery of the basics of information technology, and court technology projects vary in their success. A major technology vendor suddenly pulled out of an electronic filing project at Chicago area courts, and California in Nov 1997 discontinued a five-year $99 mil investment in a computer system to increase child support collections. The Northern District of California has the most advanced and controversial technology project, an Internet publication of all federal securities filings.

Electronic court filings spread: three steps forward, two back

Article Abstract:

Electronic case filing can include everything from e-mailing a document to filing briefs by CD-ROM and its use has spread, and the failure of some courts to understand what can and should be accomplished technically can cause some of the pilot projects to fail. Some vendors' lack of understanding of the legal community can also cause failure. The West Group is addressing standards by developing a Web-based electronic filing system.

Courts electrify suits, sparks fly; new rules needed for E-filings

Article Abstract:

Electronic filing experiments are proliferating across the US and experiencing some success, but court rules remain very much paper-bound and getting waivers or exceptions to the rules can take much time. The involvement of the West Group, which handles large electronic filing projects through its proprietary Westfile system, concerns those who want nonproprietary technology to be the basis of electronic filing.
