He's 'cutting edge' where it counts

Article Abstract:

Joseph E. Mullaney, vice chmn of the board and general counsel of the Gillette Co, heads a department of 30 lawyers. The work handled in-house is all of the SEC filings, the regular marketing and advertising clearances, some small employment matters and the rest of the office's day-to-day work. While outside counsel helps with any significant litigation, the in-house people are closely involved in managing it. Relationships with outside counsel are long-standing and Gillette tends to remain with those used, including Ropes and Gray, Jones Day, Reavis and Pogue, Skadden, Arps, and Covington and Burling.

Keep faith, switch sides; ex-civil rights advocates say they'll continue the good fight at big firms

Article Abstract:

Civil rights compliance has emerged as a new legal specialty with an increasing need for attorneys knowledgeable about this area by companies worried about possible liability. Specialists include attorneys formerly employed by the Civil Rights Division of the federal Justice Department who have decided to return to the private sector and make some money. Some in the legal community, however, do not see this as a major area of growth as Congress has slowed in enacting laws.
