He's re-engineered his department

Article Abstract:

Intel general counsel and vice president F Thomas Dunlap heads a sixty-lawyer department that handles virtually all the company's legal work except litigation and highly specialized issues. Originally hired in 1974 as an electrical engineer, he approaches legal projects like engineering ones, and applies the company's informal culture. The department uses extensive e-mail and other modern technologies. Dunlap seeks a diamond-shaped structure in external firms, with a broad middle base of experienced lawyers.

'Hands-on' lawyer in the driver's seat

Article Abstract:

Thomas A. Gottschalk, the senior vice pres and general counsel of General Motors Corp, presides over a department of about 170 attorneys worldwide. His in-house budget was more than &117 mil in 1996 and an additional $249 mil was spent on outside counsel. Gottschalk complains that most outside counsel lack creativity and are too tentative at connecting with clients. Gottschalk wants the corporate law departments for whom cost control is a big issue to play more of a leadership role in the bar.
