Honey, I shrunk the law library

Article Abstract:

Managing a law library is an expensive and time-consuming operation for major law firms. Himman, Howard and Kattell LLP, a Binghampton, NY, law firm, experienced problems in handling its three-and-a-half-room library. Lawyers had trouble accessing and distributing research and archived documents, and the problems threatened to become unsurmountable. The company decided to switch to CD-ROM because most legal libraries are available on CD and a roomful of books and documents will fit on just 10 CDs. Browsers made it quick and easy to locate information. The company still sought a better way to share information and found the answer with a networked CD-ROM jukebox. Over 100 networked PCs running Windows for Workgroups now access the 150 CDs stored on the jukebox. The system has worked well for over two years and the law firm is now considering the addition of a CD document-archiving function.
