Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom's Low Pay Commission is due to submit its recommendation on an introductory level for the national minimum wage in 1999, and the bill paving the way for the statutory pay floor was submitted to Parliament on Nov 27, 1997. Private sector employer objections include the minimum wage's interfering with the free market, fears that it is inflationary because it will increase costs, and that it will lead to job loss. Measures taken by some companies to prepare for change include wage increases and productivity improvements. Further arguments for and against the minimum wage are listed and ways of offsetting its costs are listed.
