How Weil Gotshal lassoed Houston; using Texas talent, the New York firm has become one of the city's top 10 players

Article Abstract:

Wall Street bankruptcy firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges has moved aggressively into the Houston, TX, market and built a competitive reputation and portfolio. It offers potential employees high compensation, and the office has a fairly free hand in expanding its practice to other areas of law. Many other Houston firms, traditionally staid and often considered complacent, have lost attorneys to the newcomer, which is now that city's 10th-largest firm and its most profitable according to one survey of per-partner profits.

Gayle force; a prominent firm leader ends his reign

Article Abstract:

Gibson Gayle Jr. plans to step down as managing partner of Fulbright and Jaworski, ending 12 years of successful stewardship at the firm. During his tenure Fulbright and Jaworski expanded and consolidated operations during a time when many medium-sized firms were breaking up or being acquired by large ones. The highlight of Gayle's management program was the merger with New York's Reavis and McGrath in 1989 which increased Fulbright's staff from 430 to 530 attorneys.

V & E gets to offset its losses

Article Abstract:

Houston's Vinson and Elkins may be able to emerge from the failure of its client, the First City Bancorporation of Texas, with all of the firm's assets intact. The firm can offset its $2.9 million deposit with the bank against a 1980 bank loan with a $5 million balance outstanding. This would be permitted by the common law of Texas and the bank also had a special agreement with the firm reinforcing the offset idea.
