How firms keep their associates on the job; innovative programs slow the pace of lawyer attrition

Article Abstract:

Excellent conditions in the US economy in the two years starting with late 1996 have made of the law firm associate a free agent, and the last time law firm associates saw such a demand for their services was 1985-89. Law firms are finding that keeping salaries and bonuses near the top of the local law firm market, financing of a fund whose shares vest 100% after five years of associate service, flexible partnership tracks, client contact, regulated-hours positions, and telecommuting when convenient are some of the strategies which keep associates at the firm.

Economic tide fails to lift associates; overall partnership offers at largest firms sink despite better business climate

Article Abstract:

The percentage of associates promoted to partner nationwide has decreased despite the improvement in economic conditions. Of the 10 biggest US law firms, six offered the same or fewer partnerships in 1994 than the year before. Of these 10, only four offered more partnerships in 1994, and the increases were small. Hildebrandt Inc, a legal consulting firm, thinks moving up the legal partnership track will prove more difficult in the future.

Big jump in minority associates, but... significant attrition in their later years has left partnership ranks almost as white as five years ago

Article Abstract:

Minority attorneys have not made much progress in the last five years in law firm partnership or in retention by law firms once employed. The numbers of minority associates have increased so greatly in in the National Law Journal survey of the nation's 250 largest law firms because the number of such lawyers was so small to begin with. A disproportionate number of minority partners are also of the non-equity kind.
