Article Abstract:

The 1997 National Law Journal List of the 100 most influential lawyers in America shows a dilution of the legal world to the wielding of legal power by many thousands of individuals and specialties rather than by a tiny elite, as used to be the case. Lawyers have also emerged as the leaders in community affairs and in politics. Shifting specialties bumped some attorneys from the list with 44 attorneys on the 1997 list who did not make the list in previous years. Inviting nominations from the National Law Journal's readers came for the first time in 1997.

Judges slash worker awards: NLJ study: big damages in job lawsuits are most likely to get cut, reversed

Article Abstract:

A National Law Journal survey of sexual harassment and other employment law verdicts found that a trend to radically reduce or reverse verdicts is continuing. The survey studies employment verdicts of $1mil or more in 1996 and 1997 and found a reduction of damages or reversal of awards in about 80% of the 35 cases to have gone through post-trial motions. The survey found that the higher the award, the more likely it was to be changed in post-trial motions and appellate review. Sexual harassment verdicts tended to be reduced rather than reversed.

William S Ohlemeyer's specialty is defending large corporations in products liability litigation and as one of the tobacco industry's national trial counsel spends about 50% of his time representing tobacco companies. Ohlemeyer has only lost one trial in the 12 tobacco industry cases he has tried. In his defense work in other products and personal-injury cases, he has yet to lose. Ohlemeyer's technique includes narrowing the focus of the case and attacking the plaintiff's experts directly.
