How safe is small?

Article Abstract:

A UK Health and Safety Commission consultation indicates small business employees may have a 20% higher rate of major injuries such as serious bone fractures than employees in larger companies. Research indicates small businesses may be under-reporting accident totals and that their workers appear to return to work more quickly than larger companies' employees. Other research confirms that small business employees are at greater risk, but suggests the composition of the workforce, the presence of a union, and younger firms' limited safety experience may contribute to the injury rate disparity.

HSE report casts new doubts over post-privatisation rail safety arrangements

Article Abstract:

The UK Health and Safety Commission (HSC) has recommended that Railtrack, which owns most of the railway infrastructure, correct a number of safety problems with contractors prior to its privatization in May 1996. The HSC wants Railtrack to complete required risk assessments, improve contractor performance information and infrastructure databases, monitor technical performance, review track maintenance arrangements, provide infrastructure maintenance contractors with timely and reliable track condition reports, and comply with procedures for transfer of track responsibilities.
