How to save the Doha round: A European perspective

Article Abstract:

Agenda setting and the mode of negotiating on the Doha Development Agenda (DDA), the first round of the World Trade Organization (WTO), is very much different from trade talks in the WTO's predecessor, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The model of negotiations has moved from an approach strongly dominated by the two players in world trade, the EU and the USA, towards a more balanced and multipolar approach, in which the positions of developing countries are strengthened by their more prominent role in world trade as well as by their strategy of cooperating in negotiation.

Article Abstract:

The European Union's (EU) response and coordination, the impact and relief efforts, the sustainability of post-tsunami policies, and the effects of tsunami in terms of European public opinion are discussed. An argument that the EU should be less focused on building capabilities, and much more on developing a coherent common vision guiding all its external policies is presented.
