How will the minimum wage work?

Article Abstract:

The introduction of a minimum wage in the UK will be based on the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission, which will study the issue. The Independent Policy Institute says the commissioners should serve as individuals, rather than as special interest representatives, since over 5 mil workers could be affected. Many issues need to be decided, including questions concerning special trainee rates, age or regional variations, pay period factors, implementation, annual uprating, and whether to base the wage floor on total earnings or hourly rates.

CBI rejects minimum wage as Labour puts off pay decision

Article Abstract:

The Confederation of British Industry has come out against the adoption of minimum wage law mandating a wage of 4.10 ponds per hour. They claim that such a law would increase unemployment. Labour leaders, recognizing the opposition that would be faced regardless of what wage is decided upon, have decided not to announce any minimum hourly wage target before the general election of 1995.

Labour policy

Article Abstract:

The UK Labor Party, if elected to power in 1997, plans to introduce a national minimum wage. The Party has dropped its previous formula-based approach in favor of a plan to create a Low Wage Commission, as well as a separate body to set the wage level. This latter organization would consist of independent members, union representatives, and employers.
