Ill. bar girds for tort fight; flurry of lawsuits, competing radio ads frame the looming legislative battle

Article Abstract:

The Republicans gained control of the Illinois General Assembly in the Nov 1994 elections, and the Illinois bar is girding for a tort reform battle. Physicians and lawyers have aired competing radio advertising on the subject. The Illinois Civil Justice League would like non-economic damages capped at $250,000 and punitive damages capped at twice the level of compensatory damages up to the same amount. Illinois Bar Pres David A. Decker states that politics rather than logic is fueling the drive for tort reform.

ABA to revisit thorny issues; abortion and ancillaries

Article Abstract:

Attorneys at the 1992 ABA convention will reconsider controversial policies already debated in prior years. Two years ago, convention attendees considered a resolution favoring the right to abortion. The resolution is on the agenda this year and is again expected to kindle vigorous debate. A model ethics rule curtailing law firms' ancillary businesses was adopted last year and a proposal to rescind it will be considered at the upcoming convention.
