Is big brother watching? Perceptions and research on the effectiveness of the EEOC

Article Abstract:

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave the EEOC the mandate to enforce equal employment statutes. The agency can investigate and suggest solutions to any employment discrimination matter. The adjudication part of this process is up to the courts. The EEOC can sue an alleged offender if it so chooses. The public perception of the EEOC is of an agency biased in favor of minorities, especially African Americans, although there is no research to support this perception. Lower-level employees tend to perceive the agency as more powerful than higher level ones.
