Justices seem to give INS the benefit of the doubt

Article Abstract:

The five immigration cases which the US Supreme Court has decided this term show more concern for governmental interests than for the claims of aliens and refugees. For example, INS v Elias-Zacarias dealt with forced recruitment to the ranks of the Guatemalan guerrillas as a basis for political asylum. The court held that the plaintiff did not show evidence that the guerrillas would persecute him because of his political opinion rather than because of a refusal to fight with them. There is concern that such cases will diminish the scope of refugee protection unduly.

Indigent immigrants face welfare cuts, deportation; recent welfare and immigration reforms have heightened the need of noncitizens for legal representation and assistance

Article Abstract:

Pro bono legal representation is needed by US immigrants affected by changes in welfare and immigration laws. These noncitizens run the risk of deportation unless they receive effective legal counsel. Statutory reforms affecting student visas, asylum claims, detention capacities, and legal defense limits all require knowledgable volunteer attorneys who can guide noncitizens through the legal bureaucracy.

Lawyers on juries may be bad idea

Article Abstract:

A Manhattan lawyer gives his account of exclusion from jury service, agreeing with such exclusion. The lawyer states members of his profession are often excluded because of a fear that they might dominate juror deliberations. Moreover, lawyer time spend serving on a jury is taken away from lawyering activities, a loss to the rule of law in a society.
