Law firms need telecom experts; if Baby Bell lawyers lose jobs, it's a seller's market

Article Abstract:

Attorneys at Bell Atlantic Corp. and Nynex Corp. that may become redundant following the merger of the two regional bells need not worry about employment prospects because experienced telecommunications lawyers are in high demand. Legal recruiters report that many firms are trying to develop telecom practices and these attorneys are in short supply. Nynex's legal department includes 98 attorneys, and 80 attorneys comprise Bell Atlantic's in-house staff.

Telecom bill: more oversight

Article Abstract:

The 1996 Telecommunications Act signed Feb 8 may increase federal oversight of the entire industry, despite lifting restrictions on competition for telephone, cable, TV and radio companies. Although the bill's ultimate goal is deregulation, the immediate effect will be new regulations geared at preventing the industry monopolies of past years. However, despite these FCC regulations, market forces ultimately will regulate the situation.

The great telecom war commences; lawyers struggle over secret documents that reveal plans of industry's big players

Article Abstract:

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 relies on free market competition and antitrust law to regulate the industry. Companies have been thinking since the law's enactment that joint ventures would help them compete and even long-time rivals AT & T and MCI Telecommunications Corp have been considering such a move in the local phone market. Antitrust enforcement in the telecommunications industry will encounter First Amendment issues.
