Lawyers help educate new citizens; in light of the political climate, advocates for immigration rights now view voter participation as the ultimate goal of citizenship

Article Abstract:

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund is one of many advocate groups for immigrants encouraging them to seek US citizenship and ultimately working to abolish laws that discriminate according to immigration status. These groups need lawyers to help educate immigrants and take them through the process of applying for citizenship. Applications among Asian groups soared compared to others after laws barring them from applying were dropped, but only 24% of eligible Asian Americans are registered to vote, compared to 81% of Latinos.

Britons are discovering the 'joys' of federal law

Article Abstract:

Moves toward a European Federal Union are not welcome by all Europeans. Controversies over such banal subjects as the acceptable curvature of bananas have put members of the European Union at odds and with each other and caused concern over the ultimate value of a United States of Europe. Even such sacred traditions as the Brits pint of beer have been threatened by EU's metric requirements.

Lawyers must counter attacks on the judiciary and educate the public about the Constitution

Article Abstract:

Attorneys have the duty to promote understanding of our system of justice and of judges as guardians of our democratic government. They must fight against those who would interpret judicial rulings in partisan terms and against those who attack judges inappropriately. Attorneys must, however, also expose inappropriate conduct, lack of diligence and bias on the bench.
