Lawyers reject Bush for Clinton

Article Abstract:

A National Law Journal/West Publishing Co poll of 405 randomly selected attorneys shows a large majority has lost patience with Bush and is ready to vote for Clinton. Even 20% of Republican attorneys and 40% of independents say they would vote for Clinton if the election were held in Aug 1992. Attorney dissatisfaction with Bush is particularly marked with respect to the quality of jurists he has selected for the federal bench, with 57% of those surveyed disapproving of this aspect of his first term.

Watergate's failed promise; the scandal sparked powerful legal reforms. Is the law of unintended consequences even more powerful?

Article Abstract:

Watergate resulted in laws to reform corrupt campaign funding, to promote increased access to government information, to give oversight of intelligence agencies to Congress and to authorize a special prosecutor with the mission of investigating wrongdoing in the upper reaches of government, and the jury is still out on how effective these reforms were. A bipartisan panel of experts consulted by the National Law Journal gives the highest marks to Freedom of Information Act amendments.

Searching for a middle ground: lawyers and academics promote 'communitarianism.' Is the nation ready for it?

Article Abstract:

A new political and philosophical movement known as 'communitarianism' is seeking the middle ground between liberalism and conservatism by focusing on community values and the responsibilities that go along with rights. Rights and individualism have been overemphasized by both the left and the right, according to communitarians. Examples of communitarian programs include school voucher programs, increased efforts to collect child support and support of local anti-crime initiatives.
