Legal guardian for the nation's health

Article Abstract:

Gene W Matthews, legal adviser to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heads a department of 13 with work falling into three categories, privacy and confidentiality, civil litigation, and programs covering such areas as AIDS, chronic disease, and occupational and environmental health. Matthews describes their work as helping their agency with its mission of preventing sickness and death rather than trying cases and winning judgments. Dealing with the media occupies a large part of the CDC's time and its lawyers help with that.

Article Abstract:

Joel K Bedol, the exec vice pres, general counsel and secretary of the Nine West Group Inc, the largest US maker of women's footwear and one which has a number of legal problems pending.These include a price-fixing lawsuit alleging that Nine-West and several large department stores kept the prices of 12 brands of women's shoes artificially high. Investigations by the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission were other problems.
