Legal observers assess sex case

Article Abstract:

Jurors convicted prominent Pennsylvania lawyer Richard Glanton of sexual harassment in what many consider a compromise verdict. The jury did not award damages for the sexual harassment claim but awarded $100,000 in compensatory damages and another $25,000 in punitives. The jury concluded that Kathleen Frederick did not prove that her decision to end an affair with the defendant was the sole reason for her dismissal or that other members of the firm were aware of Glanton's harassment.

Sexual harassment net widens; court looks at arbitration

Article Abstract:

The judges in Stroehmann Bakeries Inc v Local 776, International Brotherhood of Teamsters extended the reach of federal sexual harassment law to arbitration, remanding the case to a different arbitrator with the directive that the arbitrator must make a finding of fact on whether the sexual harassment occurred. Labor law attorneys take this to mean that even though arbitration is informal and private, arbitrators must render their decisions with Title VII and EEOC rules in mind.

Infighting rips Pa. High Court

Article Abstract:

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Associate Justice Rolf Larsen has accused his colleagues of being motivated by power grabbing in his judicial misconduct case. He accuses Justices Stephen A. Zappala and Ralph J. Cappy of maligning him in order to improve the chance of one of them obtaining the court's top job when Chief Justice Robert N.C. Nix, Jr. leaves. Pennsylvania's high court has long been rife with accusations of partisan politics.
