Lies, damned lies, & 400,000 smoking-related deaths

Article Abstract:

The claim by the government and anti-tobacco campaigners that smoking is the reason behind more than 400,000 premature deaths every year in the US is erroneous and based on pseudo-science. The World Health Organization reported an estimated 16% increase in lung cancer among the spouses of smokers. However, a 16% increase is statistically insignificant because such increases may be due to chance, statistical bias or the consequences of complicating factors. They also fail to consider the positive effects of smoking such as less obesity, colitis, depression, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and lower incidence of breast cancer.

The ghost of cigarette advertising past

Article Abstract:

The regulations of the Federal Trade Commission to eliminate 'health advertising' themes in cigarette ads have inadvertently caused manufacturers to resort to ads which promote the desirability of smoking. The advertising copies of the 1920s and 1930s often contained explicit language which were detrimental to the interests of the tobacco firms themselves. Most commercials made references to health effects of smoking such as smoker's cough, lung diseases, and sore throats in an effort to outsell competitors.

Secondhand smoke: facts and fantasy

Article Abstract:

Government should not limit its assessment of the consequences of smoking to the perspective of nonsmokers. It also needs to consider competing effects to smoking restrictions for it to create and promulgate sound smoking regulations. These effects include the economic and societal losses from a reduction in smoking such as loss of worker productivity from stopping smoking behavior and foregone taxes because of decreased cigarette consumption.
