Long-term historical trends in violent crime

Article Abstract:

A study presents a reanalysis of quantitative estimates of homicide rates in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day, reviewing evidence on sex, age, and class of violent offenders as well as historical patterns of the sex of homicide victims and their relationship with the offender. Theoretical approaches used in scholarship for explaining these secular trends are also explored in the study.

Crime and punishment in Scotland, 1981-1999

Article Abstract:

The substantial rises in crime in Scotland between 1950 and 1973 tended to level off after 1980, although this was not applied to the most serious crimes of rape and homicide. The chance that an offender would be caught and punished tended to decline over the period 1981-1999, with only minor and short-term exceptions.
