Using commercial off-the-shelf software in safety applications

Article Abstract:

Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software has proven useful for specific safety applications in the UK. Safety software must be near-perfect for use in high-risk industries such as defense and aviation. COTS software failures can lead to system-wide crashes. COTS software can be used for operating systems, databases, computer-aided software engineering, utilities, networking, and similar operations.
