Magnificent obsession: Chicago attorney turns late father's tales of WWII glider heroics into book

Article Abstract:

Chicago lawyer Charles Masters has turned a childhood interest in his father's WWII adventures as a glider pilot into an obsession and a book. For years he sought information on the obscure group that flew gliders across the English Channel to distract German troops inland before the Normandy Invasion landed. From 15% to 33% of the pilots, flying British Horsas or US Wacos, were injured or killed, many on landing, but the operation worked. "The Glidermen of Neptune" comes out from Southern Illinois University Press in Nov. 1995.

The graying of the law: attorneys are discovering new ways to meet needs of elderly clients

Article Abstract:

As the US population ages and the numbers of elderly grow rapidly the ABA's sections are responding with a variety of initiatives, programs, and publications. Among their concerns are physical access to the courts; the legal treatment of people in, or being committed to, nursing homes; proposed new Social Security Administration regulations that could strip many elders of legal representation; special needs of senior homebuyers or sellers; and how divorce affects the taxes and Social Security income of the elderly.

States considering discovery reform

Article Abstract:

AK will soon adopt and IL is considering the revised discovery rules that AZ initiated in 1992 and the federal courts have since accepted in limited form. As they took effect in AZ, the rules limit discovery and require the early and automatic disclosure of more information, even that damaging to the discloser's case. AZ authorities do not yet know the precise effect of the rules, intended to make litigation faster, less contentious, and cheaper. Some 15 other states have inquired about the rules.
