Mobil goes to bat for birds and bats; inexpensive exhaust stack caps save lives

Article Abstract:

Oil and gas companies with open production-unit exhaust stacks are reluctant to cover them with inexpensive devices that would save thousands of birds and bats annually. The Bureau of Land Management has also dragged its feet in issuing requirements for these simple steel cones to be placed atop all such exhaust stacks. Many of the birds killed are protected species, making their killing through negligence a crime. Mobil agreed after much lobbying by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to cover its stacks.

We're good guys: image propaganda from Mobil Oil

Article Abstract:

Mobil Oil has built its public image as a caring, responsible and trustworthy company through the use of non-product advertising and sponsorship. The company associates itself with quality by sponsoring PBS shows and arts events, and convinces the public that it cares by sponsoring non-controversial groups like the Boy Scouts. This public image can help the company gain political clout and makes it more palatable for the public when Mobil raises prices or is targeted as a bad gut by the media.
