Moving up is hard to do: firms bid DOS farewell; DOS handled a law firm's core function - word processing - brilliantly. Some firms stayed with it for over a decade. Until now

Article Abstract:

DOS has remained in many law firms, as it is adequate for creating documents which rarely contain graphics, the attorney's main function. Disadvantages are many though, and include the difficulty of finding and training employees on DOS, as people expect a Windows environment. Accommodating the year 2000 will also probably be more difficult on a DOS platform. Windows has become much more stable, and the time is nearing for law firms to upgrade.

Kutak Rock gets past its technological Stone Age: litigation partner and erstwhile tech tyro is 'appointed to oversee the firm's multi-million-dollar computer systems overhaul

Article Abstract:

The experience of the Kutak Rock law firm of Omaha, Nebraska is typical of process many firms go through when attempting to maximize the power in their firm's computer infrastructure. The decision to replace instead of retool and reconfigure the existing system is a decision facing many law firms as the advantages of newer systems outstrip their cost considerations.
