New Congress plots legal reform legislation

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the legal system that the 105th US Congress will face include deregulation, crime prevention and tort reform. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott includes product liability reform in his top 10 legislative priorities, and tort reform advocates in Congress were heartened by Pres Bill Clinton's support of limited product liability reform. Sen Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch re-introduced his civil justice reform legislation. The managed health care lobby and the medical profession are expected to support laws limiting medical malpractice claims. Other activity expected for the 105th Congress is listed.

Hurdles higher for P.C. shareholders

Article Abstract:

A new Securities and Exchange Commission policy makes it harder for activist shareholders to force votes on shareholder resolutions. Some are still making headway by threatening to try the issue in court, but Time-Warner, Gannett, and the Tribune Company have all blocked resolutions aimed at tobacco advertising by claiming the issue is one of 'ordinary business' and not corporate governance. Tobacco continues to outstrip environmental concerns as the leading issue for investor activists.
