Judge Angelo Guarino has been stripped of his seat on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas for a pattern of punishing people he thought were trying to evade jury duty. His removal came after he violated an agreement not to discipline any more prospective jurors until the practice's legality was resolved by holding a prospective juror in contempt of court. The agreement had been made during a class action against him by the ACLU for violating members of the jury pool's constitutional rights.

Crack in tobacco armor; as Liggett settles six smoking-related lawsuits, the industry's united front begins to crumble

Article Abstract:

The Liggett Group's settlement, although the company did not admit liability, represents the first break in the tobacco industry's united front and its long and successful record of defending itself. Under the class-action settlement, Liggett will fund stop-smoking programs and follow proposed regulations to keep minors away from cigarettes. The company will also pay up to $10 mil in past state Medicaid costs and 2.5 % of its annual pretax profits during the next 25 years.
