Oakland fires up for suits

Article Abstract:

The statute of limitations deadline for insurance and personal injury suits regarding the 1991 Oakland, CA fire tolls on Oct 19, 1992 and Bay area attorneys expect many insurance coverage suits to be filed before that date. In Free v Republic Fire Insurance Co a California appellate court ruled that underinsured policyholders can sue insurance companies who told them their policies provided sufficient coverage. This was the case with many Oakland fire victims who did not carry enough insurance to cover rebuilding according to the stricter building and seismic codes in existence today.

A lawyer's patent bid for bench

Article Abstract:

Patent attorney John B. Pegram thinks someone from his specialty is needed on the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and would like to fill a vacancy there. He has followed the unorthodox path of publicly announcing his candidacy rather than behind-the-scenes networking and has endorsements from several specialty bar associations. Some observers are not sure his high-profile campaign will enhance his chances for the job.
