A Texas state jury in Houston will make a momentous decision stemming from the 1989 oil spill caused by the supertanker Exxon Valdez in Alaska's Prince William Sound. The case, which has cast lawyers in unusual positions, concerns Exxon's claim that insurer Lloyd's of London owes it $250 million for its share of the $2.5 billion Exxon spent on clean-up. J Donald Bowen, a well-known plaintiff's lawyer, heads Exxon's 100-lawyer team, while Harry Reasoner, managing partner of Vinson & Elkins, leads the defense.

Article Abstract:

Scientist John A. Ewen is challenging Exxon and two Fina corporations over an invention that he says he made and to which they have laid claim while attaching the name of another scientist. Diana E. Marshall of Houston firm Schechter & Marshall is Ewen's attorney in a lawsuit seeking to show that an agreement resulting from a dispute between Exxon and Fina led them to conspire to exclude her client from rightful credit and royalties. The material in question is a transparent plastic of metal-like toughness.

Redistricting which has taken place before the 1992 elections may have a positive impact on the Republican Party's chances for victories in November. However, some civil rights attorneys feel the Republican motivated redistricting has hurt minorities because it avoided court intervention that usually helps minorities. Benjamin L. Ginsberg, the Republican National Committee's general counsel, thinks Republicans have bettered their chances in 90 congressional districts formerly under Democratic control.
