Official quits over ABA pact; N.Y. judge objects to terms of antitrust settlement

Article Abstract:

The chair of the American Bar Assn's legal education section has resigned from both the section's council and the ABA as a whole following settlement of an antitrust suit brought by the Justice Dept. Joseph W. Bellacosa, a judge on the NY Court of Appeals, said the consent decree that the ABA reached over its law-school accreditation practices yielded much to gain little or nothing. He also noted that the dispute may have led him into an ethical dilemma. Observers said his resignation portends major changes.

Judge says CEO contempt was criminal

Article Abstract:

DWG Corp chief executive officer Victor Posner has been charged with criminal contempt by a federal judge upset with Posner's alleged failure to abide by agreements resulting from a shareholders' derivative action. US District Chief Judge Thomas D. Lambros of Cleveland, OH, issued the citation on Mar 4, 1992, after hearing evidence from DWG Corp board members appointed by Lambros to monitor Posner's activities that Posner was neglecting his fiduciary duties and diverting corporate funds for his own use.

Under the Demjanjuk spotlight; unassuming judge is propelled center stage

Article Abstract:

Judge Gilbert S. Merritt, the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals judge who presided over accused war criminal John Demjanjuk's original extradition case, is back in the news for reopening the 1985 extradition case and for being on the 'short list' of candidates for Justice Byron R. White's Supreme Court seat. Merritt has been criticized by attorney Alan Dershowitz, who maintains that the extradition case was reopened as a slap at the Jewish community for opposing Merritt as a Supreme Court candidate.
