On campus, he found the good life

Article Abstract:

Legal big wheel realigns firm ties

Article Abstract:

Thomas Harvie, the vice pres and general counsel of the Goodyear Tire Co, heads a department of 47 lawyers, most of whom are based at company headquarters in Akron. The department's budget is $30 mil, of which $15 mil goes for outside counsel and $4 mil for patent fees. Harvie uses between 200 and 300 outside counsel in each year, not resorting to even a group of primary firms. His choice depends on litigation. Harvie tries to accomplish most work in-house except for litigation and foreign deals.
